When:
Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010
VAIL, Colorado —
Samana Lounge in
Vail Village will
host legendary
reggae bands Midnite
from St. Criox
tonight.
Local DJ Weez calls
the band's sound
“Trance-inducing
roots reggae, with
vocals as unique as
the island they come
from.”
The band has
gathered a loyal
international
following by
performing from Red
Rocks, to Australia,
Europe and points
between. Midnite
weaves the cultural
lyrics of “old
school” roots music
with modern-day
experiences. Naked
and raw is an apt
description for
Midnite's musical
style, in which they
forgo the frills of
extensive remixes,
overdubbing and
other musical
refinements.
“The only Midnite
performance I saw
absolutely blew me
away,” said Scotty
Stoughton of Samana
Lounge. “Over three
hours of deep,
authentic and
soulful reggae and
dub that left the
crowd in a trance.
I'm a huge reggae
fan and Midnite was
one of the best
shows I have ever
seen. The band came
on without any
introduction, just
slowly melted all
the surroundings and
captivated everyone
in the crowd.”
Lead singer Vaughn
Benjamin's
electrifying voice
seems an
amalgamation of many
great voices in
reggae — soulful,
chanting, edgy.
Vaughn's potent
lyrical style and
his brother Ron
Benjamin's exquisite
production, vocals,
dub, arrangements,
keyboard/bass
musical directorship
form the nucleus of
the band's rootsy
sound. The rest of
the band includes
Christian Molina
(drums), Edmund
Fieulleteau
(guitar), Edwin
Byron (guitar) and
Ras L (keyboards).
Midnite explodes in
live performances
with sets that often
exceed three hours.
Their vigorous,
weighty sound is
driven by the punchy
bass lines. These
shows have earned
Midnite a loyal
following throughout
the roots community.
